The internship is based in Ghana, focusing on the forestry sector. The successful candidate will be reporting to the Head of Research and Development, the internship is a free programme designed to motivate students to learn about the forestry sector and to gain research experience and knowledge.

Candidate Requirements

The Agribusiness Officer reports to the Senior Nutrition and Food Systems Officer, who is the focal person for Strategic Programme 4 (Enable Inclusive and Efficient Agricultural and Food Systems); under the overall supervision of the Assistant Director General (ADG) and Regional Programme Leader. He/she will work in consultation with other Technical Officers Partnerships and South-South Cooperation in HQ and RAF.

Technical Focus

Support to the design, implementation and evaluation of strategy and policy development and agricultural investment operations with a focus on agribusiness development and the creation of an enabling environment for efficient and inclusive agricultural and food systems, including functioning agricultural support services to rural market and finance institutions.

Key Results

Provision of technical expertise and capacity development for (i) the design of investment operations to mobilize resources for investment along agricultural value chains, in collaboration with country stakeholders and cooperating partners, ; and (ii) support to implementation and evaluation of investment operations, in accordance with the FAO Strategic Framework.

Key Functions

  • Plans and leads components of multi-disciplinary teams, leads and/or participates in internal committees, project teams, and working groups and/or provides specialized expertise on technical networks and/or international technical policy and/or international technical policy and standard setting bodies;
  • Develops technical, analytical, monitoring and reporting frameworks, and related methodologies, tools, systems and databases etc. to support the planning, implementation/delivery and monitoring of programmes of work, projects, products and/or services;
  • Designs and conducts research, data collection, validation, analysis and/or reporting activities to support the development of technical standards, international instruments, innovative approaches and strategies, new tools, technologies, technical reports/publications, and/or policy proposals as well as the provision of technical/policy/ specialist/advice and expertise;
  • Responds to country requests for technical and policy assistance, provides technical advice, assistance and solutions to Decentralized Offices and provides technical backstopping to field projects;
  • Collaborates in, provides technical backstopping to and ensures the quality/effectiveness of capacity development and knowledge sharing activities within member countries such as policy support, organizational development and individual learning events including preparation of related information, learning materials, on-line tools;
  • Promotes international cooperation/advocates best practices, increased policy dialogue and provides technical expertise at international/intergovernmental meetings;
  • Participates in resource mobilization activities in accordance with the FAO Corporate strategy.

  • Oversight of Nestlé Cocoa Plan implementation in Ghana
  • Monitoring and evaluation (M+E) of Nestlé Cocoa Plan , including CocoaAction protocols
  • Child labour monitoring and remediation system
  • Nestlé Action plan for Cocoa and Forests Initiative in Ghana
  • Agronomic support to suppliers and lead farmers
  • Implementation and monitoring of Good / Sustainable Agricultural practices
  • Improvement and innovation in all NCP areas

What will make you successful

  • Agronomy and child labour experience
  • 5 to 10 years’ experience in Agricultural work, M+E and social issues management such as child labour
  • Excellent knowledge of tropical crops specifically on Cocoa
  • Field experience in agricultural project management.
  • MS Office program
  • Good knowledge on sourcing of agricultural raw materials
  • Project management skills, including use of relevant tools and instruments
  • Leadership without direct reports.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the production of foundation planting materials in the aeroponics systems of the research institutes
• Liaise with project officers and partners
• Support project partners in laying out, execution and monitoring of demo plots and field experiments
• Collection of data from demo plots and other field trials
• Facilitate the transfer of stocks of breeder or foundation seed from research institutes to the foundation or certified seed producers
• Record and compile seed yam production and dissemination data in the formal seed system for traceability
• Provide technical assistance to the private seed companies as necessary
• Assist the seed system specialist to organise and conduct seed production related training courses and workshops at local , regional and national levels
• Facilitate, enhance and promote breeder and foundation seed businesses through media campaigns, field demonstrations on station, and advocacy efforts at all levels

• Support national need certification inspectors and other authorities in the implementation of Quality Management Protocol for breeder and foundation seed yam
• Develop a breeder and foundation seek production monitoring and evaluation system in collaboration with the seed system and the M&E teams to track seed production activities
• Establish and maintain close communication with scientist involved in YIIFSWA-II project to facilitate exchange of information and materials
• Report monthly on achievements and progress to the seed system specialist
• Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor

Qualification Required & Experience

• MSc in plant breeding, agronomy, seed technology or related field
• Individual with knowledge in breeder and foundation seed yam production
• Individual with good verbal and written communication skills
• Must be computer literate, with proficiency in Microsoft Office like Word, Excel, PowerPoint and otehr analytical software
• Ability to work with staff of different origins, nationalities and disciplines
• Ability to travel frequently across communities within the project's coverage

Person Specifications

  • A minimum of a bachelor's degree in Agriculture Science
  • A degree in project management will be an added advantage.
  •  Understanding of local economic development initiatives in mining communities.
  • Demonstrable experience of managing social and community development compliance issues.
  • Experience in Participatory Learning Appraisal and Participatory Rapid/Rural Appraisal methodologies for community mobilisation.
