Role

A university Head of Department (HOD) leads and manages an academic department, overseeing its academic, administrative, and financial aspects. They are responsible for faculty development, curriculum, student programs, and departmental budget. HODs also represent the department within the university and externally. We are currently seeking the service of dedicated and experienced Head of Department to join our University College.

The successful candidate with be responsible for leading, managing and academic department’s operations. He/she will be will be responsible for monitoring and leading all aspects of planning, staffing, and managing activities within the department, coordinating with other departments to ensure efficiency, implementing departmental policies and standards, setting goals and objectives for the department staff, and planning and managing the budgets and expenses of the department.

Job Functions

The HOD’s main duties and responsibilities shall include the following:

Leadership and Management:

  • Provide strategic direction and leadership to the academic department, aligning its goals with the institution's overall mission and objectives.
  • Plan, organize, and manage departmental activities, including curriculum development, course scheduling, and faculty assignments.
  • Supervise and evaluate departmental faculty and staff, promoting professional development and ensuring high-quality teaching and research.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive departmental culture, promoting teamwork, open communication, and a positive working environment.

Academic Program Oversight:

  • Develop and review academic programs and courses, ensuring their alignment with industry standards and accreditation requirements.
  • Monitor and assess program outcomes and student learning to ensure continuous improvement and alignment with institutional goals.
  • Stay abreast of emerging trends and developments in tertiary education, integrating them into the curriculum to ensure its relevance and currency.

Budget and Resource Management:

  • Develop and manage the departmental budget, making strategic decisions to optimize resource allocation and maximize efficiency.
  • Identify and pursue external funding opportunities, grants, and partnerships to support departmental initiatives and enhance resources.
  • Ensure proper utilization of departmental resources, facilities, and equipment, promoting their maintenance and upgrade as required.

Faculty and Staff Development:

  • Recruit, hire, and retain highly qualified faculty and staff, ensuring appropriate staffing levels to meet program and course demands.
  • Provide mentoring, guidance, and support to faculty and staff, promoting their professional growth and development.
  • Foster a culture of excellence in teaching, research, and service, encouraging faculty and staff to engage in scholarly activities and pursue professional advancement.

Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Collaborate with other departments, academic units, and stakeholders within the institution to promote interdisciplinary initiatives, joint research, and shared resources.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with external partners, industry professionals, and community organizations to enhance collaboration and promote opportunities for students and faculty.
  • Represent the department at meetings, conferences, and events, advocating for its interests and promoting its achievements.

Required Skills or Experience

Qualifications, Experience and Skill

  • A minimum of researched Master's degree in Business Administration, preferably, Logistics, Procurement and Supply Chain Management. 
  • A minimum of 5 - 10 years of experience in higher education, with a significant portion in academic leadership or management roles.
  • Should be of at least a Senior Lecturer rank.
  • Demonstrated expertise and contributions in the field of the academic department.
  • Strong understanding of accreditation standards and processes.
  • Knowledge of current trends and best practices in higher education.
  • Experience in budget management and resource allocation.
  • Exceptional communication interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Strategic mindset.

Academic Head of Department required Skills

  • Leadership and Management: Proven ability to provide effective leadership, manage teams, and foster a positive work environment.
