purpose

To focus on the management and controlling of alladministrative tasks and risk activities for the Custody business. TheOperations Manager ensures that all laid down procedures and policies are adheredto. Also ensures that all settlements activities for Equities, Money Markets,Bonds, Cash and Corporate Action transactions are processed in a diligentmanner.

responsibilities

  • Ensure that all Policy and proceduremanagement documents are up to date
  • Manage the day-to-day operations ofthe Custody team
  • Ensure daily reconciliations betweenthe Custody system and Depositories are performed.
  • Act as point of contact for Audits,Risk and Compliance and Regulatory Enquiries
  • Reviews KPI's and risks for directreports
  • Responsible for identifying rootcause, escalation, and implementing resolutions when required
  • Oversee tactical problems fromabroad perspective and recommend solutions that support strategic objectives.
  • Support Head of Custody in drivingthe strategic plans and ensuring successful implementation of allocated tasks.
  • Constantly monitor all expenses andkeep costs in line with budget
  • Identify a service model to supportthe varying needs of local and foreign clients
  • Establish and maintain excellentworking relationships within Custody and the greater RMBG
  • Attract and retain knowledgeableindividuals that will add value to the Custody business and ensure ongoingupskilling of individuals to ensure personal growth and development for the benefitof the Custody Division / RMBG as a whole

  • Implement an operational structureto support the business strategy whilst ensuring optimal capability across allasset classes and clients
  • Establish and maintain criticalprocesses, sub-processes and underlying controls needed to effectively manageoperations
  • Work with the GPO in SA to align theprocessing and controls with those in the RMB SA Custody business whilstaccepting differences where these are supported by a strong underlying businessrequirement
  • Drive efficiencies in the operatingenvironment to ensure that Custody remains scalable
  • Employ prudent risk managementpractices to ensure robust processes and controls to manage the risksassociated with day to day operational processing
  • Build a high-performance culturewithin the team to support the strategic initiatives to provide serviceexcellence that will differentiate RMBG in the market
  • Ensure that adequate reports areintroduced to allow proactive detection of exceptions so that these can bemanaged swiftly whilst seeking sustainable solutions to avoid recurrence and/orreduce risk
  • Constantly maintain an optimal levelof operational efficiency through ensuring continuous oversight and managementof headcount capacity, process efficiency and overall operational efficiency
  • Active participation at all industryforums with proactive feedback to clients and other stakeholders in terms ofthe impact of such market initiatives
  • Provide ongoing mentoring, coachingand guidance to the operational team to ensure that they understand the rootcause of all problems resulting in losses or errors and that they are involvedwhen corrective action is taken to remedy the problem
  • Accountable and responsible forcontrolling operational costs associated with operational risk to avoidfinancial losses
  • Ensure that regular courtesy callsare held with clients to address Client issues and requirements and thatproactive action is taken to address all needs or concerns
  • Actively seek to makerecommendations to improve system, processes and procedures to meet clientneeds and to be first to market in terms of launching new products and services
  • Complete all RFP’s (request forproposal), RFI’s (requests for information) and questionnaires with precisionand accuracy to ensure that all operational related information is provided
  • Provide guidance in terms of thedesired dashboard management and reporting pertaining to various aspects of theoperations environment to allow timely and accurate reporting at month end toexecutive management
  • Actively strive to build teamcamaraderie within Custody
  • Keep open lines of communicationwith all Custody staff and provide ongoing feedback where relevant to always toensure alignment between management and staff
  • Foster a culture of operationalexcellence within the Custody team
  • Set well defined balanced scorecardsfor the Custody team and ensure that they are well versed with the strategicintent of the Custody business allowing them to participate in the execution ofthe strategic objectives
  • Conduct regular performancediscussions with Custody team members and formulate individual performancedevelopment plans
  • Schedule required training alignedto individual performance development plans
  • Ensure ongoing adherence to alllegislation, regulatory requirements and risk and compliance matters to avoidcontrol breaches or non-adherence to such requirements

experience and qualifications

  • BCom Degree (or equivalent)
  • 5 to 7 years banking experience
  • A proven track record of experiencein Custody and management (3 years)
  • Advantageous to have anunderstanding and working experience of banking regulations, financialaccounting and taxation, payment, clearing and settlement systems, credit risk,process mapping and reengineering, sales and treasury products
