Project:  Market Entry in Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency for the Productive Sector

Reports to: Team Leader

Assignment Period: 01/07/2019 - 31/12/2021

Location: Accra

Project Description

The project "Market entry in renewable energy and energy efficiency for the productive sector in Ghana" provides training, advisory and other support services to strengthen the capacity of key market actors so that private-sector companies can increasingly satisfy their energy needs from renewable energy (RE) or reduce them through energy efficiency solutions. The strategic focus of the project is, on the one hand, on overcoming market entry barriers, which so far discourage the use of RE and energy efficiency by Ghana's private-sector electricity consumers. On the other hand, public utility companies must be prepared for the change in the electricity sector, which is primarily caused by self-generation of electricity from RE by their customers. In addition, the project will help to improve the preconditions for demand-oriented training and further education of required professionals In the sector. The project works in four fields of action: (1) market development and regulation for RE / energy efficiency solutions, (2) Investment preparation for major electricity consumers, (3) business strategies for public electricity utilities and (4) demand-oriented vocational qualification.

This position assumes responsibility in action area 3 for RE/EE business strategies for utilities.

Your Tasks

The Senior Advisor performs the following tasks:

  • assists project initiatives, e.g. training on distributed RE generation and energy efficiency for utilities, workshops and Individual meetings, to provide professional advisory services to and cooperate with the relevant sector stakeholders, in particular the Energy Commission, the Ministry of Power, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Power Distribution Services (PDS), Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Bui Power Authority; supports the building of capacity at utilities, In particular PDS and NEDCo, for the development and implementation of a RE/EE business strategy; supports cooperation, regular contact and dialogue with partners, assists with PR work and cooperates with relevant organisations, non-governmental agencies and Individuals In the project environment and with other projects, in particular the Renewable Energy Project Development Programme (PDP) and the Capacity for Successful Implementation of the RE Act (C-SIREA) or its successor to improve and maintain good working relationships;

  • ensures knowledge transfer of project information, In particular ensuring transfer of knowledge from work undertaken by consultants to the partner Institutions;
  • develops ready-to-use strategies and technical concepts, including guidelines, manuals and procedures;
  • assists with general project planning and develops project concepts,including preparation, organisation and moderation of planning exercises and their Implementation, management, monitoring, quality management, evaluation, communication and documentation;

 

Your Profile

Masters/MSc in an area that is related to the project objectives (power engineering, renewable energy, economics, regulatory/legal affairs, project/ market development);

  • at least 7 years of professional experience in a comparable position;
  • professional experience in the power sector is an asset, in particular
    • professional experience working for a power sector utility is a strong asset;
    • experience of working in the private sector for several years is a strong asset;
  • fluent in English in the spoken and written form. A working knowledge of German is an asset;
  • very good working knowledge of ICT technologies and computer applications (e.g. MS Office);
  • strong interpersonal skills. Work experience in an intercultural environment is an asset;
