Winrock is seeking an individual consultant with expertise in agroforestry and experience the development of agroforestry models. The consultant will support the Sustainable Cocoa Collaboration between Winrock International and ECOM, which is assisting smallholders in transitioning to sustainable, climate smart cocoa production in Ghana. The assignment will entail the development of an agroforestry model for shade-grown cocoa in Ghana.
DURATION OF ASSIGNMENT:
Up to 60 days, estimated starting date on May 13, 2019 and ending on October 30, 2019.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Specific objectives:
- Identify, analyze and recommend a suitable, viable and sustainable agroforestry model(s) for production of shade-grown cocoa in Ghana
Core activities:
- Identify existing agroforestry models;
- Assess appropriateness of these models for Ghana's different climatic zones;
- Adapt existing models and/or develop new agroforestry models that are appropriate to shade-grown, climate smart cocoa in Ghana;
- Identify species, crops, and crop combinations that can be integrated into a cocoa agroforestry system;
- Perform a comparative analysis of the proposed agroforestry models, accounting for the following:
- data requirements
- applicability to cocoa systems in Ghana
- return on investment
- cash flows
- utility/output
- Design efficient and effective climate smart approaches for farm rehabilitation services
- Prepare training models and manuals for field staff on climate smart cocoa adaptations
- Conduct Training of Trainer session
Deliverables
- Brief work plan
- Description of agroforestry models within specific climatic zones
- Assessment of proposed agroforestry models
- High-level implementation plan for proposed agroforestry models
- Standard Operating Procedures for the selected agroforestry models
- Agroforestry model(s)
- User-friendly tool(s), e.g. Excel, that uses specified inputs to assist in identifying the appropriate agroforestry and food crop combination, projecting costs, developing a workplan, and estimating yield
- Training materials and Training of Trainer session
QUALIFICATIONS AND BACKGROUND:
Educational requirement:
Undergraduate degree in agriculture, agroforestry, or related; Advanced degree is preferred but not required
Experience, Skills, and Knowledge:
- Experience with modeling agricultural systems
- Background in agroforestry
- Knowledge and understanding of the impact of climate change on agriculture generally and cocoa specifically
- Experience with smallholder agriculture in Ghana

- Candidates must be fluent in English
