AngloGold Ashanti (Ghana) Limited is currently on a journey to redevelop the Obuasi Gold Mine into a modern, efficient and long-term profitable operation. The underground mining operation will be fully mechanized, designed to produce up to an average maximum of 5,000 t/day of ore mined.

We are seeking an experienced and self-motivated person to join our dedicated team as Safety Officer – Systems.

ROLE PURPOSE AND CONTEXT

The purpose of this role is to oversee a Safety Management System that will promote a healthy and safe working environment for employees (including contractors) and visitors, and for ensuring compliance to all relevant standards and legislation. This role will work collaboratively with a range of stakeholders to establish and maintain a safety culture based on effective training, injury prevention and continuous improvement. The role holder will act as a Risk coordinator for the various departments on site and provide technical input and support in relation to all Safety Systems and procedures moving from Construction into Operations. The role holder will lead his/her team to deliver measurable outcomes as part of a continuous improvement process, to bridge any identified gaps, facilitate change and embed new systems and technological tools.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

 

  • Will be the focal point, liaise with various corporate groups (such as Risk and Governance, Integrated Operations, Information Systems, and Supply) to plan for and facilitate any required activities across the site; this includes incident investigation, risk assessments and material/fatal risk management actions.
  • Providing technical support with regard to the existing safety systems on site that governs work practices and risk control processes.
  • Initiating, coordinating and monitoring OHS training and education programs and liaising with other stakeholders for their input
  • Managing Health and safety related pages and relevant information on the OHS department intranet  site and contribute to other departmental communications
  • Ensuring implementation of recommendations from internal and external audits
  • Developing and communicating a rolling (4-3-2-1) quarterly plan for the budgeted year identifying OHS systems priorities, milestones and events
  • Developing and submitting the annual cost center budget to achieve the required targets for approved Programs
  • Delivering the work of the OHS Systems section within approved budget targets and specified timeframes, costs and related KPIs
  • Demonstrating Safety Leadership and improving the Culture across the OHS systems section regarding Safety, Health, and Sustainable Development
  • Environmental management that is integrated into team’s work plan and implementation
  • Developing the OHS Systems team to capably and consistently deliver the annual and quarterly plan according to their role and level of authority
  • Rigorously driving implementation of projects and strategies and nurturing and sustaining a culture of Accountability and Continuous Improvement within the OHS Systems section

QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE 

Qualification

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or relevant technical (Mining, Engineering) qualification or equivalent discipline

Experience 

  • Minimum 5 years’ working experience in the health and safety field in an extractive industry, with two years or more experience in OHS information systems management.
  • Previous experience with a range of safety and training systems and packages.

Technical Competencies

Safety Management systems

  • Ability to develop processes and procedures that integrate behavioral aspects into a system and ability to integrate across departments.

Audit and Inspection

  • Must have completed an external safety or lead audit course, participated in audits at other sites as a team member and can develop workplace inspection systems.
  • Ability to do an Incident investigation
  • Must have successfully completed the AIIP or IIP training course and can apply that knowledge to lead investigations for moderate or high events and can participate as a team member in major and extreme events.

Supervision and Leadership

  • Ability to lead portions of the SLP and models required behaviors in the field and ability to coach management teams to adopt new safety processes even when challenged.
  • Ability to lead and direct the work of a small team of employees.

Training and Coaching

  • Ability to deliver generic training programs to individuals or small work teams. Able to coach management teams to adopt new safety processes even when challenged.
  • Must have data and information management skills.
  • Must understand basic lead and lag safety data and can manipulate the data to develop short term safety improvement plans. Must be able to develop work plans for teams to meet predetermined objectives

Training and Coaching

  • Ability to deliver generic training programs to individuals or small work teams. Able to coach management teams to adopt new safety processes even when challenged.
  • Must have data and information management skills.
  • Must understand basic lead and lag safety data and can manipulate the data to develop short term safety improvement plans. Must be able to develop work plans for teams to meet predetermined objectives

Leadership Competencies

  • Adherence to the highest ethical standards, demonstrating accountability, integrity and transparency in actions always.
  • Develop Health & Safety personnel – assess skills, determine needs and develop training programmes for areas of responsibility
  • Provide leadership, coaching, mentoring and work direction and evaluate performance of the Safety Team
  • Must demonstrate highly developed stakeholder management and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to be the principal agent of change and development of safety culture and to ensure best practice
  • Ability to keep information confidential when required
  • Ability to lead and manage change in an environment of continuous improvement
