AngloGold Ashanti (Ghana) Limited is currently on a journey to redevelop the Obuasi Gold Mine into a modern, efficient and long-term profitable operation. The underground mining operation will be fully mechanized, designed to produce up to an average maximum of 5,000 t/day of ore mined.

We are seeking an experienced and self-motivated person to join our dedicated team as CONSTRUCTION MANAGER – INFRASTRUCTURE.

 

ROLE PURPOSE AND CONTEXT

The Construction Manager – Infrastructure is accountable for planning, monitoring and control of work in accordance with all the facilities and housing related construction, refurbishment and maintenance contracts across the whole of the Obuasi AGAG infrastructure through operational engineering policies, standards, systems and procedures in a sustainable cost-effective manner and minimize operational risks in order to meet the business’ strategic objective.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

 Safety
 
  • Work according to total quality management principles & ensure zero defect objectives & safety
  • Investigate damage, accidents, or delays at construction sites, to ensure that proper procedures are being carried out.
  • Environment
  • Adhere to site’s Environmental Management Plan
 
People:
 
  • Work with Site Surface Infrastructure, Processing Plant and Underground progress monitoring in gathering information for reports on compliant progress.
 
Work:
 
  • Inspect and review projects to monitor compliance with building and safety codes, and other regulations.
  • Interpret and explain plans and contract terms to administrative staff, workers, and contractors.
  • Prepare contracts and negotiate revisions, changes and additions to contractual agreements with architects, consultants, contractors, suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Select, contract, and oversee workers who complete specific pieces of the project, such as painting or plumbing.
  • Requisition supplies and materials to complete construction projects.
  • Develop and implement quality control programs.
  • Take actions to deal with the results of delays, bad weather, or emergencies at construction site.
  • Confer with supervisory personnel, owners, contractors, and design professionals to discuss and resolve matters such as work procedures, complaints, and construction problems.
  • Plan, organize, and direct activities concerned with the construction and maintenance of structures, facilities, and systems.
  • Evaluate construction methods and determine cost-effectiveness of plans, using appropriate software.
  • Direct acquisition of land for construction projects.
  • Schedule the project in logical steps and budget time required to meet deadlines.
  • Review labour requirements of contractors and workers to construction sites.
  • Obtain all necessary permits and licenses
  • Study job specifications to determine appropriate construction methods.
  • Prepare request for proposals for tender of services and statement of work documents/Detail Scope of Works. Also contribute to contracts, change orders, material and services purchase orders for approval by Deputy Engineering Manager. Assess and where appropriate make recommendations on contractor requests for extension of time, claims for additional payment, and contractual disputes
  • Conduct audits of Process Plant and Facilities Equipment construction, refurbishment and maintenance
  • Conduct reviews of the contract refurbishment and maintenance function to identify actions for continuous improvement
  • Outline to the Deputy Engineering Manager and Superintendent
  • Surface Support Infrastructure potential for contractor improvement;
  • Collate information from respective construction and refurbishment contractor checks on a routine scheduled basis, carry out regular and spot checks on progress to plan and quality (with subject matter experts, where appropriate).
  • Analyze and trend contracted construction and refurbishment data to determine plant condition and report this condition for action;
  • Monitor general physical condition of plant and housing assets and report
  • Monitor preventive and corrective actions as necessary;
  • Generate work requests in SAP as required for construction and refurbishment planning and scheduling
  • Perform routine contractor monitoring tasks
  • Gather information on data collected in order to diagnose / troubleshoot contractor work quality and timeliness — contract adherence, notify of errors and delays, drive corrective action to rectify quality and timeliness issues in the shortest timeframe.
  • Actively participate in contractor improvement programmes and root Cause Failure Analysis process of contractor shortcoming

  • Identify and communicate potential cost reduction initiatives for contractors
  • Propose cost savings on projects
 
Time:
 
  • Execute work in a timely manner
 
Risk Management:
 
  • Monitor contractor performance on asset health system and take proactive measures to address symptoms of potential failure.

 

QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE

Qualification

  • Diploma/Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or Building Technology or equivalent.
  • Financial, commercial and project management through work experience and courses.
  • Contract qualification is an added advantage.

 

Experience

  • An experienced civil/building engineering contract management professional with 15+ years’ experience in management of project contractors and construction.
  • Must have a minimum 3 years direct Project Manager/Construction Manager – Infrastructure experience in residential/ commercial construction.
  • Must have a minimum 7 years’ experience in residential/ commercial construction or inspection.
  • A mix of contractor and consultant work is desirable
  • Knowledge of site development and residential construction techniques, permitting, and inspections.
  • Working knowledge of applicable building, sanitary, and electrical code standards
  • Experience in Project and Construction Management
  • Knowledge of SAP PM module.

 

Technical Competencies

  • Strong contract management and compliance experience.
  • Sound project management skills
  • Should have analytical skills to be able to evaluate information and solve complex problems.
  • Detail oriented to understand complex systems, and recognition that a minor error can cause major problems.
  • Commercially astute and able to work effectively with third parties.
  • Legally astute with respect to project delivery and maintenance systems
  • Excellent skills in AUTOCAD, Solid Works, Microsoft PowerPoint, Word,Project and Excel
  • Must be able to communicate about technical issues both orally and in writing
  • Knowledge in OEM legalities and mining regulations
  • Demonstrated understanding of good engineering practices and the implementation of proactive maintenance strategies.
