Job Summary

The Traditional and Alternative Medicine Specialist is responsible for providing holistic healthcare services using recognized traditional, natural, and alternative healing systems. The role focuses on promoting wellness, preventing illness, and supporting recovery through herbal, nutritional, physical, and mind-body therapies, while ensuring safety, ethical practice, and integration with conventional medical care.

Key Responsibilities

1. Patient Assessment and Care

• Conduct detailed consultations to assess patients’ physical, emotional, and lifestyle conditions.
• Diagnose health concerns using principles of traditional and alternative medicine systems (e.g., herbal medicine, acupuncture, naturopathy, homeopathy, or other approved modalities).
• Develop personalized treatment plans incorporating natural remedies, diet, exercise, and lifestyle modifications.

2. Treatment Administration

• Administer or supervise traditional and alternative therapies in line with approved protocols.
• Prescribe herbal or natural medicines, therapeutic exercises, or relaxation techniques as appropriate.
• Monitor and document patients’ progress and adjust treatment plans as needed.

3. Education and Patient Empowerment

• Educate patients on holistic wellness, preventive health, and natural healing practices.
• Promote lifestyle habits that enhance physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
• Conduct wellness seminars, community outreach, or public health education on traditional and alternative therapies.

4. Research and Development

• Participate in clinical or ethnobotanical research to validate and improve traditional and alternative treatments.
• Document indigenous medical knowledge and contribute to scientific publications or policy recommendations.
• Stay updated on current developments, evidence-based practices, and safety guidelines in complementary medicine.

5. Collaboration and Integration

• Work in coordination with physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other health professionals to ensure integrated and safe patient care.
• Provide expert consultation on traditional and alternative health approaches within multidisciplinary teams.
• Refer patients to conventional healthcare professionals when necessary.

6. Quality Assurance and Compliance

• Ensure that all treatments, formulations, and procedures comply with national health regulations and ethical standards.
• Maintain accurate records of consultations, treatment plans, and herbal prescriptions.
• Uphold confidentiality and professional conduct at all times.

7. Professional Development

• Engage in continuous learning, professional certification, and participation in workshops or conferences.
• Support the training of students, interns, or junior practitioners in traditional and alternative medicine practices.

Required Skills or Experience

Qualifications

• Certificate in Traditional and Alternative Medicine, Herbal Medicine, Naturopathy, Homeopathy, Acupuncture, or related field from a recognized institution.
• Certification or registration with the appropriate professional council or regulatory body (where applicable).
• Strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, and pathology from both biomedical and traditional perspectives.
• Proven experience in clinical practice within traditional or alternative medicine settings.
• Excellent communication, empathy, and interpersonal skills.
• Commitment to ethical, patient-centered, and evidence-informed practice.

Desirable Skills

• Experience in integrative medicine or working alongside conventional healthcare providers.
• Knowledge of multiple healing systems (e.g., Ayurveda, TCM, African Traditional Medicine).
• Research experience in medicinal plants, natural products, or traditional healing practices.
• Public health education and community wellness outreach experience.
