The Role

We, nBogne need a backend engineer to build a proof-of-concept transport layer that transfers health data over GSM networks, with GPRS as the primary path and SMS as a fallback. This is a 2-month contract with defined deliverables, though we value expert input on approach, architecture, and implementation decisions.

the viability of this approach.

What We Are Exploring

  • Custom wire format for health data transmission over constrained networks
  • Data conversion between standard health formats (FHIR) and transport-optimized formats
  • Transmission over GPRS and SMS using GSM modems
  • Fragmentation and reassembly for payload delivery over SMS
  • Integration with health interoperability systems (OpenHIM)
  • Bidirectional communication between remote facilities and central infrastructure
  • Offline-first design principles for unreliable network conditions

This is a proof-of-concept. We are validating the approach and learning what works, not building production infrastructure yet.

What We Are Looking For

Clear understanding of:

  • Binary protocols and byte-level data handling: experience with Protocol Buffers, MessagePack, CBOR, struct packing, bit manipulation, or building custom wire formats
  • Serial communication principles and patterns: familiarity with UART, RS-232, AT command interfaces, or libraries like pySerial (Python) or SerialPort (Node.js)
  • Compression and encoding techniques: working knowledge of gzip, zlib, LZ4, Brotli, base64, or similar for payload optimization
  • Low-bandwidth and high-latency network constraints: experience with protocols like MQTT, CoAP, or designing for satellite, LoRa, or 2G/EDGE networks
  • API integration patterns: REST, webhooks, gRPC, WebSockets, or message queue integration (RabbitMQ, Redis, NATS, Kafka)
  • Data integrity across unreliable transport channels: implementing checksums, CRC, hash verification, retry logic, acknowledgment patterns, idempotency, or deduplication

We need someone who thinks carefully about edge cases, understands why every byte matters in constrained environments, and can clearly communicate technical trade-offs.

Minimum 3 years of experience applying these concepts in real projects.

Good to Have

  • Exposure to health data standards: FHIR, HL7 v2, CDA, OpenHIM, HAPI FHIR, Mirth Connect, or IHE profiles
  • Experience with SMS gateways or telecom APIs: Africa's Talking, Twilio, Vonage, Plivo, Kannel, SMPP protocol, or USSD integration
  • Background in embedded systems, IoT, or hardware communication: Arduino, Raspberry Pi, ESP32, GSM/GPRS modules (SIM800L, SIM900, Quectel), or firmware development
  • Familiarity with interoperability middleware or message brokers: OpenHIM, Apache Camel, RabbitMQ, Kafka, or similar
  • Experience working in low-resource or infrastructure-constrained contexts: offline-first design, edge computing, mobile network deployments in Africa, or rural health system implementations

Engagement Details

  • Duration: 2 months
  • Type: Contract
  • Location: Remote (West Africa timezone overlap preferred but not required)
  • Collaboration: Regular check-ins with the nBogne team, async communication via Slack or similar
