The Department of Global Communications/Strategic Communication division internship is for an initial period of two months with an opportunity for extension, pending on the needs of the department.

This internship is located in the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Ghana, within the Information Centres Service (ICS), Strategic Communications Division (SCD), Department of Global Communications (DGC). UNICs are the principal sources of information about the United Nations system in the countries where they are located, they are also responsible for promoting greater public understanding of and support for the aims and activities of the United Nations by disseminating information on the work of the Organization to people everywhere, especially in developing countries

The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of the National Professional Officer.

Responsibilities

To provide support in monitoring and identifying relevant content for publication in local media and on UN Ghana website and social media accounts, specifically as follow:

  • Drafting press releases and summaries, an in editing content format
  • Researching specific topics and creating resource guides
  • Assist in web management efforts
  • Assist with social media campaigns.
  • Develop communication materials based on good practices, and examples of impacts and achievements.
  • Assist in organizing events and meetings.

Client orientation:

Considers all those to whom services are provided to be “clients” and seeks to see things from clients’ point of view. Establishes and maintains productive partnerships with clients by gaining their trust and respect. Identifies clients’ needs and matches them to appropriate solutions. Monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients’ environment to keep informed and anticipate problems. Keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects. Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

  • Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications;
  • Have good knowledge in graphic design and use of Adobe software such as InDesign and Photoshop
  • Have a demonstrated ability to do videos/electronic media
  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position(s) advertised, fluency in English is required;. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
