AngloGold Ashanti (Ghana) Limited is currently on a journey to redevelop the Obuasi Gold Mine into a modern, efficient and long-term profitable operation. The underground mining operation will be fully mechanized, designed to produce up to an average maximum of 5,000 t/day of ore mined. 

We are seeking an experienced and self-motivated person to join our dedicated team as Engineer – Legal & Compliance.

ROLE PURPOSE AND CONTEXT

The Engineer – Legal & Compliance is accountable for the oversight of compliance, and the monitoring of compliance, with legal requirements as also with contractual agreements in the Obuasi Refurbishment Programme. If necessary, the role holder will provide training on compliance and contract interpretation to managers. This is to allow continuous monitoring and control of compliance by competent personnel in all areas to fulfil area managers’ requirements in order to meet the business’ strategic objective.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Work according to total quality management principles & ensure zero defect objectives & safety
  • Adhere to site’s Environmental Management Plan
  • Gather information for the Engineering Technical Specialist for reporting performance
  • Gather approval for commencing document production from Engineering Technical Specialist
  • Obtain approval prior to distribution of produced documentation from Engineering Technical Specialist
  • Monitor all work is compliant in all areas with Government of Ghana regulations and requirements for the AGAG mining license
  • Control that the quality of work by contractors and AGA and AGAG personnel is carried out to correctly fulfil the construction and delivery contracts and the requirements of the Obuasi Refurbishment Plan
  • Produce any necessary training material to standard, through the application of operational engineering policies, standards, processes and procedures, in accordance with AGA and AGAG guidelines/instructions
  • Provide training on compliance and contract interpretation to required standards as in-house or external courses
  • Produce documentation allowing monitoring and control of works being carried out and training of personnel for present and future roles in the Processing Plant, admin, surface and UG,  infrastructure and operations is compliant internally and externally
  • Actively participate in training review programmes as required to permit continuous improvement of training produced.
  • Identify, communicate, and implement potential cost reduction initiatives
  • Propose cost savings projects
  • Execute work in a timely manner
  • Incorporate monitored new trainee performance on trainee engagement “health” database to permit the inclusion of proactive measures in training going forward to address symptoms of potential failure.
  • Report directly to the Engineering Technical Specialist on issues and identify and execute improvement projects
  • Stop work by contractor and/or AGA/AGAG personnel if there exists a high risk of breach of contract or compliance or the situation is or will be unsafe

QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE

Qualification

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Maintenance Engineering, or equivalent
  • Masters’ Degree in Management will be an advantage
  • Second degree in Law, an advantage
  • Financial, commercial and project management through work experience and courses.

Experience 

  • An experienced engineer with 10+ years’ experience as an Engineering  Compliance Manager, preferably in mining or metallurgical plant
  • Experience in compliant and legal management of Maintenance and Repair Contracts (MARC)
  • Experience in Project Management
  • Knowledge of SAP PM module. 

Legal Requirements

  • Must possess Engineering Managers Certificate of Competency from Mineral Commission of Ghana.
  • Professional Certificated Engineer with a relevant certification body

Technical Competencies

  • Strong Legal and Compliance  experience in mining and/or extractive metallurgy environment (construction/ refurbishment an advantage)
  • Sound project management skills
  • Should have analytical skills to be able to evaluate information and solve complex problems.
  • Detail oriented to understand complex systems, and recognition that a minor error can cause major problems.
  • Commercially astute and able to work effectively with third parties. Legally astute with respect to project delivery and maintenance systems
  • Excellent skills in Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, Project and Excel Must be able to communicate about technical issues both orally and in writing
  • Knowledge in AGA standards
  • Knowledge in OEM legalities and mining regulations
  • Demonstrated understanding of good engineering practices and the implementation of proactive maintenance strategies
