Purpose

Primary Purpose:

  • To develop and implement the Africa Region’s Communications and External Relations strategy, objectives and plans, that is aligned with and support realisation of the Region’s Business strategy, priorities and objectives, in order to increase the organisation’s competitive advantage, whilst protecting, maintaining and enhancing the Newmont brand.
  • To partner with the RSVP and ARLT to formulate and execute the Africa Operations' overall business strategy and objectives in order to achieve growth targets.
  • To provide strategic direction and leadership to the Africa Region’s Communications and External Relations department to ensure the implementation of the department’s strategies, objectives, plans, programmes and procedures to guarantee optimised performance in line with strategic and operational business goals by delivering value adding services, advice and coaching to the respective business functions.

Secondary Purpose:

  • To develop a deep understanding of the key stakeholders and their needs within the geographies Newmont Africa operates in order to develop and strategically manage relationships which promote partnerships and alliances that support the Company’s S&ER programmes and enhance the Company’s reputation.
  • To lead the coordination of communications, media relations and the linkage of national external relations with the site S&ER and Communication teams and other site led functions with a Regional to Site Shared service approach, to guarantee consistent internal and external messaging and coordination of the overall Regional Communications and External Relations strategy.
  • To lead and manage all organisation-wide communication, both internal and external. 

Essential Duties

Communications and External Relations Strategy Development and Alignment to overall Regional Business Strategy

  • Develop and implement a Communications and External Relations strategy aligned to the Regional business strategy and objectives to ensure sustained competitiveness.
  • Develop and implement an annual External Relations Strategic Plan and Engagement Plan in coordination with key internal stakeholders to be endorsed by the African Regional Leadership Team (ARLT) and signed off by the RSVP.
  • Formulate overall Communications & External Relations strategies and priorities and develop programmes and messaging which deliver business strategic priorities and objectives while enhancing the company brand and reputation.
  • Develop, lead and execute a centralised, robust and fully integrated strategic communications and external relations plan that aligns employees and key external stakeholders with the region’s business strategic objectives, whilst inspiring management and workforce engagement.
  • Guarantee the integration of company vision, mission, culture and values into the communication strategies and efforts and confirm that it is consistently communicated across multiple channels.
  • Develop and execute appropriate and consistent communications strategies to successfully execute organisational change initiatives.
  • Develop and implement effective policies, procedures and an integrated communications system that is aligned with the Region’s mandate and supportive of the Communications and External Relations strategy of facilitating interfaces and collaborations with key partnerships / stakeholders.
  • Review and update the communication processes and procedures continuously to ensure best practices.
  • Take full accountability for the successful delivery of the allocated External Relations Platform objectives as defined in the annual Africa Region Strategy Map

Communications and External Relations Infrastructure, Strategy and Initiatives Management

  • Develop, align and provide advice and direction to the Region’s ARLT and other managers to guarantee the successful execution of Communications and External Relations initiatives
  • Lead developing of Social Media (SM) strategy and manage Regional SM accounts
  • Manage messaging strategies

Communications and External Relations Department’s People and Finance Management

  • Define and set the annual performance objectives for the Communications and External Relations department in accordance with the Region and department’s strategy and business plan, including the following activities:
    • Develop the strategic communications plan based on business strategic priorities, employee engagement surveys and global brand reputation survey and identified enterprise risks.

Region Governance Review, Control and Reporting

  • Manage the Communications and External Relations department according to good corporate governance standards and principles.
  • Develop and continuously review internal controls, Communications and External Relations business processes, Regional policies and procedures in relation to their implications on communications and external relations.
  • Review delegation of authority and make recommendations.
  • Compile monthly status reports.
  • Drive the implementation of performance audit reports.
  • Prepare statutory and annual Regional governance reports.

Training & Experience

Formal Qualification (including Professional Registrations):

  • Master’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, International Relations, Journalism or related field plus formal registration with an appropriate professional body / association plus a MBA.

Additional Knowledge:

  • Sound knowledge of relevant local government laws and regulations in a multi-cultural, international / developing country environment, including legislation related to customer rights and the provision of information to communities.
  • Sound knowledge of the mining business environment, the relevant role players within the business and their key responsibilities and outcomes.
  • Broad business knowledge and focus with the ability to recognise issues, problems and capitalise on opportunities.
  • Sound knowledge of how to analyse and monitor a company’s strengths and weaknesses in order to identify and respond to opportunities and threats in the communications and external relations environment.

Experience:

  • Between 10 and 15 years’ demonstrated experience in the management of all or a major portfolio of Communications and External Relations, including media relations, internal communications, government relations, digital communications, CSR, company brand reputation management, external relations, crisis and issues management, journalism, project planning and measurement.
  • At least 5 years’ experience should have been gained in an executive or senior manager position with demonstrated experience in developing internal and external communication strategies and policies, devising and assessing effective communication tactics, managing people and complex communication projects.
  • Demonstrated successes in working collaboratively in multi-cultural teams in expatriate settings. Work in developing countries, specifically in West Africa preferred.
  • Be regarded as a trusted strategic business advisor and partner.
  • Demonstrated understanding of business partnership through building constructive relationships with communities, government officials, policy makers, and other key external partners.
  • Experience with industry organisations, multilateral financial institutions, NGOs and civil society institutions. 
  • Demonstrated successes in cultivating teamwork across functions and locations (global, regional, and corporate).
  • A proven track record of aligning Communication and External Relations strategies to the business resulting in improved organisational performance.
  • Track record of effecting cultural change; the ability to influence, energise and motivate.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous enhancement and promotion of a company’s brand reputation and recognition.
