Our international team provides trading, sales, structuring and risk management solutions for our clients across global financial markets. This includes FX, commodities, equity, credit, fixed income and debt instruments. We also offer market insight, trading services, analytics and new financial products across a number of asset classes.

Job Purpose

To be responsible for pricing and transacting financial instruments including money markets or foreign exchange for the bank’s clients including other banks, corporate and individual clients. This includes sales and purchases that result in profitability for the bank. All transactions have to be within the agreed trading limits.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities

1. Monitor and analyse local and international market trends
- Check overnight news on global markets, local news and how various prices in the markets have changed since the previous day.
- Follow local and international financial, economic, political and social trends and assess their possible effects on foreign exchange and interest rates (long and short term rates).
- Interpret financial market reports by carrying out detailed data analysis.
- Observe the market and all of the signs which make up the price action and form an opinion on the market’s direction.
- Anticipate and be alert to market related activities and changes.

2. Manage and execute the trading book and manage trading risk
- Check and confirm trading positions from the previous day to ascertain the current risk exposure and to ensure the current positions are in line with trading limits and types of exposures.

- Monitor the bank’s exposure on various interest rate and foreign exchange products including spot, swaps, derivatives, repo’s and bonds.
- Monitor liquidity and alert the Head of Global Markets if there are any alerts or concerns on the forecast liquidity position.
- Ensure that all trading activities are managed within the constraints and limitations set out by the bank’s assets and liabilities committee.

3.Trade money market instruments or foreign exchange on a daily basis

- Quote pricing on interest rate products (short term cash, fixed income or repos) or
foreign exchange taking into account the bank’s margins and profitability targets as
well as local regulations on fair market pricing. Engagements include banks and GM
sales team.
- Negotiate rates or obtain market prices from market-making traders in markets
where Standard Bank is not the dominant player.
- Make the market for a range of vanilla products traded within the domestic market,
where appropriate.
- Capture deals into the bank’s trading system and ensure that sufficient information
is made available to enable the execution of the deal.
- Respond to requests for pricing from the bank’s branches or relationship managers
for their customers’ transactions.
- Be responsible for the timely buying and selling of foreign currencies electronically
or telephonically according to market changes and customer requests.

4.Ensure interbank and stakeholder interfaces
- Maintain continuous contact with the interbank market – in-country as well as with the Standard Bank/Stanbic network.

- Promote business development and networking internally and externally.
- Communicate with all dealing room staff, branch and FX senior staff
- Ensure prompt response to information requests from both external sources as well as Standard Bank / Stanbic Treasuries.
- Maximise profit to shareholders by sourcing / placing liquidity based on knowledge of customers’ positions before accessing interbank / other sources.
- Cross-sell to Corporate Banking as clients borrowing requirements shift to the longer end of the curve.

5. Ensure funds management/ALCO
- Do transfers to and from the Bank’s accounts, in order to ensure liquid cash position

- Source funding for Bank’s cash position, when required
- Ensure that there are sufficient assets to cover liquid asset requirements

Preferred Qualification and Experience

Honours Degree - Finanance and Accounting
CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst)

Knowledge/Technical Skills/Expertise

Local Market Knowledge - Expertise on the opportunities, competitive environment, regulations, and risks related to doing business in a particular country.
- Proficiency Level: PROFICIENT - Clear knowledge and application of the concept.

Interntional Market Knowledge
 - Expertise on cross border transacting, multi-country risk taking, regulations governing cross border transactions and the risks of trading in multiple jurisdictions.

- Proficiency Level: PROFICIENT - Clear knowledge and application of the concept.

Derivatives Markets - Knowledge of the financial markets for financial instruments such as futures contracts or options.
- Proficiency Level: PROFICIENT - Clear knowledge and application of the concept.

Hedging - Practical understanding of the tools available to reduce the risk of negative price movements of investments or assets.
- Proficiency Level: PROFICIENT - Clear knowledge and application of the concept.

Settlement Systems - Knowledge of settlements methods or systems (e.g. SAMOS, CLS etc.) as well as specific knowledge of payment cut-off times and implication of late payments made.
- Proficiency Level: SEASONED - Applies concepts without requiring supervision, able to provide technical guidance when required.
