IPA specializes in using the randomized controlled trial methodology to evaluate the impact of development programs.

IPA in partnership with the World Bank Africa Gender Innovation Lab and the Finance, Competitiveness and Innovation Global Practice are conducting a study known as the SME Investment and Gender. The SME Investment and Gender study builds upon a previous experiment conducted among Ghanaian micro and small firms. Local partners have implemented its different components – providing access to financial services, training beneficiaries and disbursing grants. The experiment is designed to further our understanding of what works to help women develop their businesses. Notably, the research team seeks to better understand whether and under what conditions cash grants can increase the profits of the female-owned firm.
