Job Summary:

Responsible for managing MTN Ghana's litigation portfolio, ensuring the effective handling and timely resolution of legal disputes while safeguarding the company's interests and minimizing legal risk.

Tasks

Litigation Strategy & Legal Risk Management

  • Develop and execute litigation strategies that protect the organization's legal, financial, and reputational interests while aligning with business objectives.
  • Assess legal and regulatory risks arising from disputes, investigations, and legal proceedings, and provide proactive recommendations to mitigate potential exposure.
  • Lead the development of dispute resolution and settlement strategies in collaboration with internal stakeholders and external counsel across commercial, employment, regulatory, and other litigation matters.
  • Monitor emerging legal, regulatory, and industry developments, evaluate their potential impact on the business, and provide timely guidance and recommendations to relevant stakeholders.
  • Partner with Legal, Compliance, Risk, Information Security, and business teams to evaluate the legal implications of projects, initiatives, and business decisions, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and best practices.

Litigation Operations & Case Management

  • Manage the end-to-end litigation lifecycle, including case assessment, pleadings, discovery, evidence gathering, witness preparation, settlement negotiations, and dispute resolution.
  • Oversee and coordinate litigation activities to ensure matters are progressed efficiently, effectively, and within approved budgets and timelines.
  • Supervise and manage a portfolio of litigation matters, ensuring appropriate case strategies, resource allocation, and reporting mechanisms are in place.
  • Respond to legal processes, including subpoenas, court orders, regulatory requests, and other compulsory legal demands, ensuring timely and compliant responses.
  • Engage, manage, and oversee external counsel, consultants, and vendors, including negotiating fee arrangements, monitoring performance, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality legal services in accordance with agreed standards.

Governance, Compliance & Investigations

  • Develop, implement, and continuously enhance litigation management frameworks, policies, procedures, templates, playbooks, and best-practice guidelines to strengthen legal governance and operational effectiveness.
  • Ensure the secure storage, organisation, retention, and management of litigation-related records, evidence, legal documents, and case files in accordance with legal, regulatory, and organisational requirements.
  • Lead, conduct, or oversee internal investigations relating to employee, regulatory, compliance, and other corporate matters, ensuring investigations are handled professionally, objectively, and in accordance with applicable laws and company policies.
  • Support regulatory enquiries, investigations, audits, and enforcement actions by coordinating legal responses and maintaining effective engagement with relevant authorities.

Stakeholder & Regulatory Engagement

  • Build and maintain effective relationships with regulatory bodies, courts, industry associations, government agencies, and other key external stakeholders to support the organization's legal and regulatory interests.
  • Provide trusted legal advice and guidance to business leaders and stakeholders on litigation, investigations, regulatory matters, and legal risk management.
  • Deliver training, awareness programmes, and capability-building initiatives to enhance stakeholder understanding of litigation processes, legal obligations, and risk mitigation practices.
  • Collaborate across functions to promote a culture of compliance, effective governance, and informed decision-making throughout the organization.

Qualification Required & Experience

Minimum Requirements:

  • A Degree in Law with a Professional Law certificate from the Ghana School of Law.
  • LLM is a plus.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ litigation experience, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role.
  • Strong negotiation and settlement experience.
  • Technology or business experience is an advantage.

Professional/Technical Competencies:

  • Working knowledge of litigation from pre-dispute to post-dispute across government agencies, arbitrations and courts.
  • Conflict management, advocacy, public speaking and legal advisory skills.
  • Legal contract drafting, contract management, policy design and development.
  • Project management, stakeholder relationship management and service level agreement management.
  • Strong analytical, research, reporting and information management capability.

Skills/Physical Competencies:

  • Strong leadership, collaboration, communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • High integrity, ethical judgement and ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Strong planning, prioritisation, analytical thinking and problem-solving ability.
  • Results orientation, accountability, initiative and effective negotiation and influencing skills.
