Overview

The Writing Tutor provides one-on-one and group instructional support to empower students in developing strong academic writing, articulate public speaking, and effective presentation skills. Acting as both coach and mentor, the tutor guides students through every stage of the communication process, fostering self-reliance, critical thinking, and confidence across all academic disciplines.

Key Responsibilities

Writing Instruction & Document Drafting

  • Guide students through the complete writing lifecycle: conceptualizing themes, formulating strong thesis statements, structuring logical arguments, and building coherent paragraph transitions.
  • Evaluate written assignments for clarity, flow, tone, and audience appropriateness across various academic and professional formats (e.g., argumentative essays, literature reviews, research briefs, executive summaries).
  • Instruct students on style mechanics, sentence structure, academic vocabulary, and precise usage of citation frameworks

Oral Communication & Presentation Coaching

  • Coach students on structuring speeches, organizing slides, and crafting engaging opening hooks and closing statements.
  • Conduct live practice runs for individual presentations, group reports, and capstone defenses, delivering actionable feedback on vocal variety, pacing, articulation, and eye contact.
  • Teach physical delivery strategies, including confident posture, gesture management, and effective use of visual aids without reliance on slide scripts.
  • Facilitate techniques for managing public speaking anxiety, handling Q&A sessions under pressure, and adapting messaging to varied audiences.

Pedagogy & Student Mentorship

  • Employ non-directive tutoring methodologies—asking probing questions to guide students toward identifying their own errors and developing self-editing capabilities.
  • Conduct diagnostic assessments of recurring writing and speech patterns, creating tailored action plans for individual student improvement over time.
  • Adapt instructional strategies to support non-native English speakers, addressing language transfer issues, idiom usage, and fluency barriers.

Workshop Design & Resource Development

  • Develop, update, and facilitate targeted skill-building workshops on topics such as peer-review techniques, avoiding plagiarism, slide design, and persuasive argument construction.

Administrative Duties

  • Maintain detailed, confidential records of each session, noting student progress, specific areas addressed, and recommended follow-up actions.
  • Collaborate with faculty and academic department coordinators to align tutoring strategies with course syllabi and institution-wide learning objectives.
  • Participate in staff development seminars, ongoing pedagogical training, and regular team reviews.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Communication, Literature, Linguistics, Public Relations, or a closely related field (Required).
  • Exceptional command of English grammar, composition, style, and academic citation formats.
  • Demonstrated patience, empathy, active listening, and the ability to adapt instructional methods to suit diverse learning styles and cultural backgrounds.
