Underground Mining Alliance Akyem (“UMAA”) is a Joint Venture between African Underground Mining Services Limited (AUMS) and Rocksure International carrying out underground development and production works for the AngloGold Ashanti (Obuasi) Mine.
Job Description
- UMAA is seeking to employ qualified and experienced persons to fill the position of Production Blastman.
- This is an Obuasi-based Fixed Term Contract position with a competitive work roster at its operation in Obuasi. Remuneration package includes attractive salary and performance-based incentive payments for the right candidate.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Handle and transport explosive materials in a safe manner according to standard
- Charge up and fire stopes blasts according to blast plan
- Demonstrate full understanding of charge plans and charge stopes according to plan
- Complies with all EHS&T policies, procedures and instructions. This includes the correct use of safety devices and protective equipment, prompt report-ing of any hazardous situations, which they cannot themselves correct, making the necessary changes to eliminate or control the hazard and reporting immediately any accident or injury which arises during work duties.
- Complies with all company policies and procedures that are displayed and amended from time to time
- Takes reasonable care for their own safety and that of other persons who may be affected by their acts.
- Performs pre-start checks, SWICs and other mandatory requirements.
- Ensuring inspections and maintenance is carried out on all equipment before use.
- Ensures that all tools are serviceable and safe.
- Must carry out standard workplace inspection practices and procedures and prepare the areas for drilling, charging or ground support in accordance with mine safety procedures.
- Maintains a high standard of housekeeping.
Required Skills or Experience
- Must have the relevant blasting certificate of competency by the Ghana Minerals Commission
- Experience with a variety of explosives and initiating systems used underground
- Understands how to handle and transport explosives in a safe manner
- Competent to maintain magazine and store explosives
- Competent in the use of a charge up machine
- A minimum of 5 years underground mining experience
- Prior experience working for an Underground mining company
- Willing to take instruction and learn more from experienced work colleagues
- Relevant Ghanaian driving License class C & E.
- Strong and accurate English communication both written and verbal
- A minimum requirement of WASSCE or its equivalent.
- First aid and Mine Rescue Certificate.
- Efficient operation of an underground Charge up machine.
- Mincom Operator’s certification is an added advantage.
