Coginta is a non-political NGO recognized as being of public interest, specializing in judicial and security governance, conflict prevention, and social cohesion. Its objective is to support host governments in strengthening judicial and security institutions in accordance with the norms and principles of the rule of law, and to contribute to the prevention of violence, insecurity, and crime in order to promote an environment conducive to stability, peace, and socioeconomic development.

Coginta is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and has national offices in Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Mozambique, Niger, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Chad. Since 2021, Coginta Ghana has implemented several initiatives in governance, security and social cohesion throughout the country.

Location: Tamale, Ghana (with possible missions to the field)

Contract duration:  12 months renewable

Working time: Full-time (100%) 

Direct supervisor: Finance and Administration Manager

Context and justification

As of March 2026, Coginta is implementing the project “EU for a Secure Ghana – Specific Objective 3” and is recruiting an Accountant. This is a full-time position based in Tamale, Ghana, for an initial 12-month contract, renewable. The expected start date is 1 June 2026.

The project

Financed by the European Union, the project aims to strengthen peacebuilding and violence-prevention mechanisms across key stakeholders. These include state institutions, traditional authorities, civil society organisations particularly women’s groups as well as forcibly displaced populations and their host communities.

Job purpose and key responsibilities

The Accountant will support Coginta’s finance department in Ghana by ensuring accurate bookkeeping, payment processing, payroll, compliance with donor rules, and preparation of financial statements in line with national standards and donor requirements.

Under the supervision of the Finance and Administration Manager, the Accountant will:

Financial Management

  • Input and maintain accurate financial data in accounting software and spreadsheets.
  • Maintain organized records of financial transactions, invoices, receipts, and payments.
  • Process and verify invoices, purchase orders, and expense reports.
  • Prepare and process payments to vendors, suppliers, and service providers.
  • Manage petty cash, including monitoring balances and expenditures.
  • Assist with the preparation of declarations related to social security and tax obligations.

Compliance & Control

  • Reconcile bank statements, petty cash, and other financial accounts.
  • Review and verify expense reports from CSOs and partners for accuracy and compliance with Coginta and donor procedures.
  • Ensure that financial documentation is complete and audit-ready.
  • Support compliance with Ghanaian tax and regulatory requirements.

Reporting & Audit Support

  • Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and donor financial reports.
  • Compile and organize financial documentation for audits, donor reviews, and internal inspections.
  • Support the Finance and Administration Officer during external audits and financial reviews.

Administrative Support

  • Provide administrative support to the finance department (filing, scanning, photocopying).
  • Assist with general office support tasks when needed.
  • Collaborate with program, administration and logistics teams to ensure accurate financial follow-up.

Other Duties

  • Perform any other tasks consistent with the role and required for the successful implementation of the Action.

Required Skills or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. 
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., part qualification of ICA, ACCA, CIMA) are an advantage. 

Professional Experience

  • 5-10 years of experience in an accounting or finance role. 
  • Experience in the NGO sector is preferred. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of donor-funded project financial procedures is a strong asset.
  • Proven experience in grant management and micro-grants, particularly with European Union funding mechanisms.

Technical Skills (Savoir-faire)

  • Strong numerical and analytical skills. 
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel essential). 
  • Strong knowledge of finance and accounting processes, including reconciliations and compliance checks.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and finance-related software (Odoo being an strong advantage).
  • Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills.
  • Strong communication and reporting skills.
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken); knowledge of local languages of the Northern Regions is an advantage.
