Role Overview

The Head of Poultry Production will lead and manage all poultry operations across Maamani’s value chain, including day-old chicks (DOCs), brooding, rearing, and layer production systems. The role is responsible for ensuring optimal bird health, production efficiency, biosecurity compliance, feed integration, and operational profitability, while overseeing coordination with the feedmill, veterinary services, and processing operations.

This position is critical to delivering high-quality eggs, efficient feed utilization, and sustainable poultry production at scale.

Reports To: Facility Manager/ Head of Operations

Industry: Agribusiness (Poultry, Crop Production & Commodity Aggregation)

Key Responsibilities

1. Poultry Production Management (End-to-End)

• Oversee the full lifecycle of poultry operations:
  • DOC placement and brooding
  • Grower phase management
  • Layer production and egg collection
• Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) for each stage
• Optimize:
  • Mortality rates
  • Growth performance
  • Egg production rates (laying percentage)
• Ensure proper housing, ventilation, lighting, and stocking density

2. Bird Health & Veterinary Services

• Establish and manage an internal veterinary program
• Design and implement:
  • Vaccination schedules
  • Disease surveillance and early detection systems
• Lead response to disease outbreaks and ensure rapid containment protocols
• Maintain strong collaboration with external veterinary authorities where required
• Ensure compliance with animal welfare standards

3. Biosecurity Management

• Design and enforce strict biosecurity protocols across all facilities
• Control:
  • Farm access and personnel movement
  • Equipment sanitation
  • Visitor entry procedures
• Implement zoning (clean/dirty areas) and infection control systems
• Train all staff on biosecurity practices and monitor compliance
• Conduct regular audits to prevent contamination risks

4. Feedmill Integration & Feed Management

• Work closely with the feedmill team to:
  • Develop cost-effective, nutritionally optimized feed formulations
  • Align feed production with bird lifecycle requirements
• Monitor:
  • Feed conversion ratio (FCR)
  • Feed quality and consistency
• Ensure efficient feed distribution and minimize wastage
• Provide input into raw material sourcing (maize, soybean, additives)

5. Egg Production, Handling & Processing

• Ensure efficient egg collection, grading, and storage systems
• Maintain high standards of:
  • Egg quality
  • Hygiene and handling
• Oversee packaging and dispatch processes
• Minimize breakage and post-harvest losses

6. Operational Efficiency & Cost Control

• Develop and monitor production KPIs, including:
  • Feed conversion ratio (FCR)
  • Mortality rate
  • Cost per bird
  • Cost per crate of eggs
• Identify inefficiencies and implement continuous improvement strategies
• Manage labor productivity and farm resource utilization
• Work closely with finance to track and improve unit economics

7. Farm Infrastructure & Environment

• Oversee maintenance of:
  • Poultry houses
  • Water systems
  • Waste management systems
• Ensure availability of:
  • Clean water supply
  • Backup power systems
• Integrate manure handling with manure processing operations

8. Compliance, Health & Safety

• Ensure compliance with:
  • National livestock regulations
  • Environmental standards
  • Occupational health and safety requirements
• Maintain proper records for:
  • Audits
  • Certifications
• Promote a strong safety culture across all farm operations

9. Data Management & Reporting

• Maintain accurate records of:
  • Production data
  • Mortality and health logs
  • Feed consumption
• Generate weekly and monthly performance reports
• Use data to drive decision-making and operational improvements

10. Team Leadership & Capacity Building

• Recruit, train, and supervise farm staff, supervisors, and technicians
• Build a disciplined and accountable operations team
• Provide ongoing training in:
  • Animal handling
  • Biosecurity
  • Production best practices
• Foster a results-driven culture focused on productivity and quality

Job Requirements

Qualifications & Experience

• Degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine, Agriculture, or related field
• Minimum 5 years’ experience in poultry operations
• Proven experience managing large-scale automated layer system or integrated poultry farms
• Strong understanding of:
  • Poultry nutrition
  • Disease control and prevention
  • Commercial egg production systems
