Underground Mining Alliance Akyem (“UMAA”) is a Joint Venture between African Underground Mining Services Limited (AUMS) and Rocksure International carrying out underground development and production works for the AngloGold Ashanti (Obuasi) Mine.
Job Description
UMAA is seeking to employ qualified, experienced, and motivated Mine Captain to join our Mining Team. This is Obuasi based Fixed Term position with a competitive work roster at its operations in Obuasi. Remuneration package includes attractive salary and performance-based incentive payments for the right candidates.

Mine Captain
Reporting to the Mine Foreman, the successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing daily mining activities, particularly underground to ensure that work is carried out safely, efficiently, and in compliance with laws and company procedures.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate daily mining operations to ensure safe and efficient execution of production activities.
- Enforce compliance with mine safety rules, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and statutory regulations.
- Lead and manage underground crews, including task allocation, discipline, and performance monitoring.
- Implement short-term mine plans and ensure development, stoping, and haulage activities meet production targets.
- Conduct workplace inspections, risk assessments, and pre-shift toolbox meetings.
- Ensure proper installation of ground support and adherence to geotechnical and ventilation requirements.
- Monitor the safe use, care, and availability of mining equipment, tools, and materials.
- Investigate and report incidents, accidents, and near misses, and implement corrective actions.
- Coordinate with Mining Engineers, Shift Bosses, Geology, Engineering, and Safety departments.
- Prepare and submit daily production, safety, and shift reports.
- Take charge of underground operations during emergencies until relieved by senior management.
- Identify operational inefficiencies and recommend improvements to enhance safety, productivity, and cost control.
Required Skills or Experience
- Must possess a minimum of BSc. in Mining Engineering from a recognized University with minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a Hard Rock Underground Mines.
- Must be conversant with the Mining Act and related regulations of the Republic of Ghana.
- Must possess a valid Ghanaian driving and operating licenses (C & E Classes) and able to drive manual SUV underground.
- Strong leadership and supervisory skills with the ability to manage diverse work crews.
- Sound knowledge of underground mining methods, safety systems, and operational controls.
- Good understanding of mining legislation, safety regulations, and company policies.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to identify hazards, assess risks, and enforce corrective actions.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills under pressure.
- Basic computer literacy, including reporting and record-keeping.
- High level of integrity, discipline, and safety consciousness.
- Ability to work both day and night.
