Underground Mining Alliance Akyem. (“UMAA”) is a Joint Venture between African Underground Mining Services Limited (AUMS) and Rocksure International carrying out underground development and production works for the AngloGold Ashanti (Obuasi) Mine.

Job Description

UMA is seeking to employ qualified and experienced persons to fill the following positions: Cable Bolt Operator. These are Obuasi-based Fixed Term position with a competitive work roster at its operations in Obuasi. The remuneration package includes an attractive salary and performance-based incentive payments for the right candidates.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain cable bolting rigs, hydraulic drills, and ancillary equipment to install cable bolts, rock bolts, and mesh according to mine plans and engineering specifications.
• Conduct quality control checks to ensure cable bolts are installed according to specifications.

• Conduct workplace hazard assessments before commencing cable bolting activities.
• Interpret ground support plans and install bolts to specified patterns, lengths, and tensions
• Drill holes to the required depth and angle using dedicated cable bolting rigs.
• Prepare, cut, and insert cables into drilled holes, ensuring correct placement as per engineering designs.
• Mix and pump grout into cable bolt holes for reinforcement and stability.
• Perform pre-start and post-operational checks on cable bolting equipment to ensure safe and efficient performance
• Monitor equipment performance and report faults or defects to the maintenance team.
• Maintain proper housekeeping of the cable bolting equipment and surrounding work areas
• Accurately record daily work activities, including bolt installation data and materials used.
• Work collaboratively with mining and ground control teams to optimize productivity.
• Follow all underground safety regulations and procedures, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Ensure compliance with mine regulations, company policies, and industry best practices.
• Identify and report hazards, safety incidents, near misses, ground control issues, and unsafe working conditions to supervisors.
• Participate in shift handovers and safety meetings.
• Participate in safety meetings and risk assessments
• Mentor trainees and assist in crew training programs

Required Skills or Experience

• Recognised Trade Certificate through a recognised apprenticeship or institution or Minerals Commission (MINCOM) Certification
• A minimum of two (3) years progressively responsible experience in a similar role, preferably in a gold mining environment.
• Must possess a valid Ghanaian driving and operating license (C & E Classes) and be able to drive a manual SUV.
• Experience operating mechanised cable bolting rigs such as Sandvik, Atlas Copco or similar cable bolting machines
• Strong understanding of underground ground support techniques, geotechnical principles and mine safety standards
• Knowledge of safety procedures and regulations related to cable bolting
• Flexibility and willingness to assist with varied tasks and responsibilities.
• Willingness to work in outdoor environments and varying weather conditions
• Must demonstrate strong work ethics and be able to communicate courteously with co-workers.
• Hazard identification and risk assessment knowledge and skills.
• Ability to work under pressure and have the desire to learn and achieve.
• Ability to work day and night rotation
• Good verbal and written communication in English.
