The Position: A Strategic Overview

The Director of Finance and Investments is a key member of the university's executive leadership team, reporting directly to the President. This executive will provide strategic financial stewardship, overseeing all aspects of the university's financial health, ensuring long-term sustainability, and driving growth through prudent investment and astute capital management.

You will be more than a financial controller; you will be a strategic partner to the President and the Board of Trustees, translating the institutional vision into a viable, long-range financial model. The successful candidate will be an experienced leader with unimpeachable integrity, a deep understanding of complex financial systems, and a passion for using finance to advance an academic mission.

Core Responsibilities & Strategic Functions

1. Financial Strategy & Executive Leadership:

  • Serve as the chief financial advisor to the President and Board of Trustees on all matters related to the financial health and strategy of the university.
  • Able to manage grants and write proposals for securing funding.
  • Develop, execute, and continuously refine a long-range financial plan that aligns with the university's strategic goals, ensuring fiscal stability and enabling growth.
  • Lead the annual budget development process, collaborating with all divisional heads to create a comprehensive institutional budget that reflects strategic priorities.
  • Provide dynamic leadership, mentorship, and professional development to the finance and accounting team, fostering a culture of excellence, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
  • Prepare and present clear, insightful financial reports and analyses at Board meetings and to other key stakeholders.

2. Financial Operations & Internal Controls:

  • Oversee all core financial operations, including general accounting, payroll, accounts payable/receivable, cash management, and student financial services.
  • Ensure the timely and accurate preparation of all financial statements in compliance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and other regulatory requirements.
  • Design, implement, and maintain robust internal controls to safeguard university assets, ensure financial integrity, and prevent fraud.
  • Manage the annual financial audit process, serving as the primary liaison with external auditors.

3. Investment Management & Treasury:

  • Develop and manage the university's investment policy and strategy for its endowment, reserves, and other institutional funds to achieve prudent growth and capital preservation.
  • Evaluate, select, and manage relationships with external investment managers, custodians, and financial advisors, monitoring performance against benchmarks.
  • Oversee all treasury functions, including debt management, capital financing strategies for new projects, and sophisticated cash flow forecasting to optimize liquidity.

4. Risk Management & Strategic Analysis:

  • Establish a comprehensive risk management framework to identify, assess, and mitigate financial, operational, and compliance risks across the institution.
  • Conduct complex financial analysis, modeling, and forecasting to support strategic decision-making on tuition pricing, new program viability, major capital projects, and potential partnerships.
  • Analyze operational efficiency and propose cost-containment strategies without compromising academic quality or student experience.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • A Master’s degree in Finance, Business Administration (MBA), Accounting, or a related field.
  • A professional accounting or finance certification (e.g., ACCA, CA, CPA, or CFA) is required.
  • A minimum of 3 years of progressive financial leadership experience, with at least 1 year in a senior management role (e.g., Director of Finance, Controller, VP of Finance).
  • Deep expertise in financial modelling, long-range forecasting, strategic budget management, and investment principles.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
  • High proficiency with advanced accounting software and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems.

Preferred Attributes

  • Substantial experience in the higher education or healthcare sector, with a strong understanding of their unique financial models (e.g., endowment accounting, grant management, tuition revenue cycles), is highly preferred.
  • A collaborative and transparent leadership style with a proven ability to mentor and develop a high-performing team.
  • Exceptional strategic thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate complex financial data into actionable insights for non-financial stakeholders.
  • Proven experience presenting to and advising executive boards.
