Underground Mining Alliance Akyem. (“UMAA”) is a Joint Venture between African Underground Mining Services Limited (AUMS) and Rocksure International, carrying out underground development and production works for the AngloGold Ashanti (Obuasi) Mine.
Job Description
UMAA is seeking to employ a qualified and experienced person to fill the following position. This is an Obuasi-based Fixed Term position with a competitive work roster at its operations in Obuasi. The remuneration package includes an attractive salary and performance-based incentive payments for the right candidate.

Position Summary
The Mason/Carpenter is responsible for constructing, maintaining, and repairing structural elements and infrastructure critical to mining operations. This role requires expertise in both masonry and carpentry and working in confined spaces, adhering to strict safety protocols, and ensuring all construction tasks meet industry and regulatory standards.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Build and install timber supports, lagging, cribbing, and other structural elements to reinforce tunnels and shafts.
- Construct, repair and maintain ventilation structures, barricades, bulkheads, stopping walls and concrete structures such as walls, platforms, staircases, and foundations for mining equipment.
- Assist in shotcrete application and other concrete reinforcement tasks.
- Measure, cut, and shape materials (e.g., wood, concrete, steel) to precise specifications.
- Mix, pour, and finish concrete for various construction projects.
- Safely handle and transport construction materials and tools to and from underground work sites.
- Operate and maintain hand and power tools, including saws, drills, hammers, and measuring devices.
- Inspect and repair existing structures and perform the necessary repairs or replacements to ensure safety, stability and integrity of underground infrastructure.
- Conduct preventive maintenance on underground mine infrastructure to prevent hazards
- Verify and ensure that wood, steel, and concrete supports are in proper condition and meet safety regulations before use.
- Maintain an inventory of timber, cement, and other construction materials.
- Follow all safety protocols including proper PPE use, hazard identification and regulations specific to underground mining operations.
- Participate in toolbox talks and risk assessments before commencing tasks.
- Maintain accurate records of work completed and materials used and report issues and safety concerns to supervisors.
- Work closely with the mining team, engineering team, safety team and other tradesmen to complete projects efficiently.
- Perform any other reasonable administrative tasks assigned by the supervisor.

Required Skills or Experience
Qualifications, Skills & Experience
- A minimum of WASSCE and Trade certificate in Carpentry, Mansory or a related field
- A minimum of 2 to 3 years of experience in carpentry, masonry or a related field.
- Proven experience as a Mason/Carpenter in an underground mining environment
- Knowledge of timber and concrete work in confined spaces.
- Ability to read technical drawings and blueprints.
- Proficiency in using construction tools and equipment
- Strong knowledge of underground construction techniques
- Ability to work in confined and challenging environments
