Job Description

  • Department: Retail / Snacks
  • Reports To: Retail Superintendent
  • Direct Reports: Retail Workers & Team Leaders
  • Location: HPW Fresh and Dry Ltd, Adeiso, E/R (Onsite)

Position Summary

The Packing Shift Leader is responsible for overseeing and optimizing packing operations to ensure that all products are packed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with food safety standards and customer specifications. This role involves maintaining a clean and sanitary packing environment, managing resources effectively, and leading a team to meet production targets while adhering to quality and cost parameters.

Key Responsibilities

Supervision of Packing Operations

  • Develop and implement packing plans and processes to ensure optimal productivity.
  • Lead, coordinate, and supervise the packing team, ensuring adherence to operational standards and procedures.
  • Monitor and evaluate packing operations, including the inspection of packaging materials and raw materials for compliance with specifications.
  • Troubleshoot and make necessary adjustments to packaging machinery; coordinate with the maintenance team for major repairs.
  • Train and mentor team members on machinery operation and best practices.
  • Manage requisitions for packaging materials and consumables; oversee the return of excess items to storage.
  • Continuously assess and recommend improvements to packing processes and resource utilization.
  • Ensure timely and accurate completion of orders, meeting or exceeding quantity, quality, and cost targets.
  • Ensure compliance with customer specifications and food safety standards throughout the packing process.

Resource Management and Recordkeeping

  • Maintain accurate records of packing activities, inventory, packaging waste, and finished products using SAP and other tracking systems.
  • Oversee the documentation and management of packing material issuance and reception.
  • Ensure machinery is operated according to guidelines to maximize its lifespan and performance.

Hygiene, Health & Safety, and Security

  • Uphold high standards of cleanliness and hygiene in the packing area to ensure products are packed in a sanitary environment.
  • Implement and enforce health and safety protocols for the packing team and ensure the integrity of packaging machinery.
  • Maintain security measures for the retail production facility.

Team Leadership and Development

  • Supervise and motivate immediate team members to achieve production goals and maintain quality standards.
  • Clearly communicate company policies and procedures to the team; seek guidance from superiors or other departments when needed.
  • Conduct performance appraisals, identify training needs, and arrange for relevant training and development.
  • Administer disciplinary actions in accordance with company policies and procedures.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform computer-based tasks.

Required Skills or Experience

Minimum Qualifications

  • Higher National Diploma in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • At least 1 year of experience in food packaging or a similar industry.

  • Leadership: Demonstrates strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire and manage a team effectively.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Organizational Skills: Strong ability to plan, organize, and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Technical Proficiency: Knowledge of packing machinery and processes, with the ability to perform basic troubleshooting.
  • Computer Literacy: Proficient in using computer systems, including SAP and other relevant software.
  • Accountability: High level of reliability, integrity, and adherence to company policies and ethical standards.
