The Aquaya Institute (‘Aquaya’) is a nonprofit research and consulting organization dedicated to advancing global health through universal access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). We deliver critical insights, data, and tools to support informed policy, program, and financing decisions. This knowledge helps to secure safe water and sanitation for vulnerable populations, improving human health and well-being.

Aquaya’s portfolio spans public health, economics, technology development, and social entrepreneurship in over 20 countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. We have published or contributed to over 40 peer-reviewed research articles and produced numerous other reports and publications.

Aquaya maintains an office in Nairobi, Kenya, and Accra, Ghana. Staff members are also in the US, France, Uganda, Ghana, Ethiopia, and Morocco. Many of our projects are carried out in collaboration with academic research groups and expert consultants.

About the Visual Communications Contractor Position

As Aquaya’s portfolio of research programs grows, we are seeking a Visual Communications Contractor with a strong focus on design to manage the following key responsibilities:

  • Graphic Design and Formatting Support: Develop visually engaging dissemination materials for projects and publications. Design research briefs, infographics, social media posts, videos, and other multimedia materials.
  • Document Formatting: Format documents in Word and PowerPoint.
  • Compliance: Ensure 508 compliance for all Aquaya outputs and adherence to project branding guidelines.
  • Photography and Videography: Capture and edit photos and videos for various communication channels. Join fieldwork, documenting research activities and stories from the field.
  • Collaboration: Engage with Aquaya staff and partner organizations from various countries to create content.

Criteria for the Visual Communications Contractor Position

The following qualifications are necessary for this position:

  • Experience: Demonstrated experience in graphic design and communications (2+ years).
  • Education: Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, communications, journalism, science, or a related field.
  • International Development: Experience with or interest in international development.
  • Software Proficiency: Ability to use digital media software such as Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, and Microsoft Office.
  • Photography: Experience taking and editing photos and videos.
  • Social Media: Familiarity with platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter.
  • Language Skills: Fluency in English, with excellent writing and communication skills.

  • Organization and Time Management: Outstanding skills with an attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Team Collaboration: Proven ability to work closely with a small team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, maintaining a positive and productive attitude and a good sense of humour.

Compensation and Benefits

Aquaya offers competitive compensation commensurate with experience. This is a contracted role up to 20 hours per week with the potential to turn into a full-time staff role.
