Ghana Health and Education Initiative (GHEI) is recruiting for a Health Program Coordinator (HPC) to be based in Humjibre, Ghana.

Start Date: September 1, 2022

Duration: September 1, 2022 – August 31st, 2023

II. Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably a Masters's degree in Public Health.
  • Knowledge and experience in maternal and child health care.
  • Minimum 1 year of project management experience, preferably in Africa.
  • Strong preference for candidates familiar with logic models and program design specifics.
  • Experience with data analysis generating descriptive statistics (Excel is sufficient).
  • Knowledge and experience in proposal writing.
  • Familiarity with creating budgets and tracking expenditures.
  • Fluency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
  • Ability to live and work in a low-resource environment with limited internet capabilities.?and intermittent power outages.
  • Demonstrated cross-cultural awareness.
  • Excellent spoken and written English.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with all stakeholders in Ghana and around the world.
  • Commitment to the highest professional standards, ethics, and values.
  • Resilient, patient, flexible, and willing to perform a wide variety of tasks as they arise.

III. Overview of the Position

Reports To: In Ghana, the HPC reports to GHEI’s Country Director. There is a dotted line support relationship with the U.S.-based Executive Director (E.D), and the HPC will be required to have frequent communication with the E.D.

This position entails working with GHEI’s local health staff to plan, implement, and monitor a range of community-based health activities. The primary focus will be on the continued management and implementation of the Mother Mentor for Child Development (MMCD) Program, which aims to improve maternal health and early child health and development.

The HPC will be the program lead, working with local staff and US-based volunteers to ensure the success of the program. The HPC will also be responsible for a Health Facility Delivery Incentive Program (HFDIP) and other activities as assigned. In addition, the HPC may plan and facilitate the annual community health evaluation survey carried out by short-term volunteer groups during the summer of 2023, as well as work with visiting pediatric residents. The HPC works alongside two Health Program Administrators (HPA’s).

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

Program Management and Development (50%)

  • Lead the health team in the management and implementation of the MMCD in partnership with the education team, who leads the early child stimulation aspect of the program.
  • Support the HPAs in management, monitoring/evaluation of the Health Facility Delivery Incentive program (HFDIP).
  • Oversee other health-related activities and programs as assigned.
  • Oversee the monitoring and evaluation of all health programs.
  • Plan and manage short-term volunteer health projects by planning suitable projects, writing itineraries and project-specific handbooks, and assisting with onsite logistics and emotional support.
  • Work with Maternal and Child Health Program Advisor to implement annual MMCD health training and evaluations.
  • Work with Education Program Development Advisor and Education Program Coordinator to implement annual early childhood stimulation training.
  • Support fund development activities for health, including writing and developing grant proposals, sponsorship packages and exploring collaborative partnerships.
  • Interface regularly with target communities and local government agencies; network with local government agencies to integrate and align GHEI health programs with existing government health priorities and strategies. ?
  • Support GHEI’s development efforts by participating in fundraising campaigns (as needed), grant research and proposal development efforts and donor relations (report-writing and correspondence).
  • Support the delivery of a quality donor experience to health program donors.

Administration (25%)

  • The HPC is expected to assume administrative duties in collaboration with local staff. These include (but are not limited to) writing budgets, monitoring expenditures, reporting expenses, writing, and revising reports and taking meeting minutes. They are also expected to undertake other responsibilities that may arise, as delegated by the Country Director, or as needed.
  • The HPC may facilitate short-term volunteer programs, including pre-departure communication with volunteers and on-site programming and coordination. HPC should be prepared to assume a mentoring role with the volunteers as they adjust to life in Humjibre.

Capacity Building (25%)

  • Mentor and build management capacity of two local HPA’s through formal and informal training and activities as they take on a leadership role within the organization.
  • Build the capacity of the 2 full-time Mother Mentors and 1 part-time Mother Mentor.

 

IV. Compensation and Benefits

GHEI puts nearly all our funds into supporting our mission of providing necessary health and education programs to communities in rural Ghana. Unfortunately, we cannot cover the cost of international travel, nor can we cover the cost of visas and health insurance for international candidates.

Salary: The HPC will receive a salary of 1200 GHC/month, equivalent to $200 USD. This salary is non-negotiable.

Housing: In Humjibre, the HPC will also receive free housing on-site for the duration of the agreement.

Vacation: The HPC receives 25 days of holiday a year.

For Candidates Not Currently Based in Ghana: If coming from overseas, the HPC will receive initial transport to Humjibre from Accra and all necessary immigration registrations and documents for foreign residents in Ghana.
