AngloGold Ashanti (Ghana) Limited, Obuasi Gold Mine is currently near completion of the redevelopment phase to become a modern, efficient and long-term profitable operation. The underground mining operation has been fully mechanized and designed to produce up to an average maximum of 5,000 t/day of ore mined.

We are seeking an experienced and self-motivated person to join our team as LEGAL MANAGER

ROLE PURPOSE AND CONTEXT 

The purpose of the role is to carry out legal research and draft legal opinions and review legal documents for AGAG and other subsidiaries.

The role holder will assist with the company’s Secretarial duties including coordinating Board meetings, drafting Board papers and writing minutes for all entities as well as providing support in managing and reporting the company’s cases effectively by actively working closely with external counsel to reduce the cases on the litigation register.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Demonstrate Safety Leadership and improve the culture across the department and with own team regarding Safety, Health, Environmental and Sustainable Development.
  • Enforce all environmental work procedures that have been issued by the Departmental Manager.
  • Attend all scheduled and assigned environmental training meetings.
  • Attend all scheduled and assigned environmental training meetings.
  • Provide legal advisory services to the Obuasi and Iduapriem mines, as well as the other SDUs in Ghana.
  • Advice on legal actions by the company or against the company and liaise with External Counsel when required.
  • Draft and review legal contracts, agreements and other documents as required by the Group.
  • Provide support in Company Secretarial and Corporate Governance matters.
  • Carry out Legal Research, Analysis and Opinion.
  • Negotiate, prepare/draft and finalize legal documentation.

  • Manage legal and regulatory risks and liaise with relevant departments to ensure that where legal risks have been identified, appropriate courses of action have been taken.
  • Handle complaints against the Company and any associated legal and regulatory issues.
  • Attend meetings and liaise with statutory regulatory bodies including the Minerals Commission, Lands Commission and Environmental Protection Agency.
  • Monitor external counsel and negotiate legal fees, to ensure that the company obtains value for money.
  • Conduct training for directors of the SDUs on the roles and obligations as directors as well as training for a section of management, on contracts and how to avoid risks in the contracting process

 

QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE

Qualification

  • Degree in law/Qualification as a Professional Lawyer as provided under the Legal Profession Act of Ghana.

  • Must have attained a considerable level of proficiency in law especially commercial and business law.
  • Must have the skill to conduct legal research and write legal opinions.

  • A minimum of 4 years at the Ghana Bar

  • Good sense of judgment and ability to quickly identify potential risks within the business.
