The primary objective of this assignment is to adapt existing WorldCover weather-index insurance products to new crop varieties and new markets, by gathering both qualitative and quantitative evidence from the literature and from expert opinions. A second objective is to support our Research Team in building historical loss databases (georeferenced crop yields), and in testing alternative insurance product designs against historical losses. A third objective is to research, catalog, and evaluate multiple bioclimatic time-series (gridded and point-based datasets).
This is a great opportunity for a trained agronomist or agricultural economist to apply his/her research skills to commercial enterprises.
Deliverables
- Crop Product Sheets: 3-4 pp documents that compile details on specific crop phenology, crop growing calendars across markets, crop growth cycles, yield response factor to water, and effects of weather stresses.
- Annotated historical yield loss databases for selected crops and markets
- Annotated catalog of country-scale and continent-scale bioclimatic data sources
