Underground Mining Alliance Akyem (“UMAA”) is a Joint Venture between African Underground Mining Services Limited (AUMS) and Rocksure International, carrying out underground development and production works for the AngloGold Ashanti (Obuasi) Mine.

UMAA is seeking to employ qualified and experienced persons to fill the position of a Safety Supervisor.

This is an Obuasi-based Fixed Term Contract position with a competitive work roster at its operation in Obuasi. The remuneration package includes an attractive salary and performance-based incentive payments for the right candidate.

Job Purpose

A Safety Supervisor in a mining firm is responsible for ensuring that all mining operations are carried out safely and in compliance with company policies, mining regulations, and occupational health and safety standards. The role focuses on preventing accidents, injuries, occupational illnesses, and damage to equipment and property.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure employees comply with safety rules, procedures, and regulations.
  • Monitor adherence to company Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) standards.
  • Promote a strong safety culture across the mine.
  • Perform regular inspections of underground and surface work areas.
  • Identify unsafe conditions and practices.
  • Recommend and follow up on corrective actions.
  • Conduct Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and risk assessments.
  • Identify potential hazards before work begins.
  • Ensure adequate control measures are implemented.
  • Investigate accidents, near misses, and unsafe occurrences.
  • Determine root causes and recommend preventive measures.
  • Prepare investigation reports and maintain records.

  • Conduct safety inductions for new employees and contractors.
  • Organize toolbox talks and safety meetings.
  • Educate workers on safe work practices and emergency procedures.
  • Ensure employees wear and properly use required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Inspect PPE for suitability and condition.
  • Report PPE shortages and replacement needs.
  • Assist in developing and implementing emergency response plans.
  • Coordinate emergency drills such as fire, evacuation, and mine rescue exercises.
  • Ensure emergency equipment is available and functional.
  • Ensure compliance with mining laws, environmental regulations, and occupational health and safety requirements.
  • Support inspections and audits by regulatory authorities.
  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly safety reports.
  • Maintain records of inspections, incidents, training, and corrective actions.
  • Track safety performance indicators.
  • Monitor contractors’ compliance with site safety requirements.
  • Ensure contractors receive appropriate safety orientation and supervision.

Required Skills or Experience

  • Diploma or Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Management, Mining Engineering, or a related field.
  • Professional safety certifications such as NEBOSH, IOSH, ISO 45001, or equivalent.
  • First Aid and Emergency Response certification.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years’ experience in occupational health and safety, preferably in the mining industry.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Knowledge of emergency response and crisis management procedures.
  • Strong knowledge of mining health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Ability to identify workplace hazards and conduct risk assessments.
  • Incident and accident investigation skills.
  • Excellent report writing and documentation skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Leadership and team supervision abilities.
  • Training and coaching skills for safety awareness.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to conduct safety audits and inspections.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Knowledge of emergency response and crisis management procedures.
  • Experience conducting safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments.
  • Must possess a valid Ghanaian driving and operating licenses (C & E Classes) and able to drive manual SUV underground.
  • Ability to learn new tasks quickly as well as train, coach, and mentor crew members
  • Ability to work in a cross-cultural environment.
  • Ability to work both day and night.
