Underground Mining Alliance Akyem (“UMAA”) is a Joint Venture between African Underground Mining Services Limited (AUMS) and Rocksure International carrying out underground development and production works for the AngloGold Ashanti (Obuasi) Mine.

Job Summary

UMAA is seeking to employ qualified and experienced persons to fill the position of Senior Purchasing Officer.

This is an Obuasi-based Fixed Term Contract position with a competitive work roster at its operation in Obuasi. The remuneration package includes an attractive salary and performance-based incentive payments for the right candidate.

The Senior Purchasing Officer is responsible for managing and coordinating the procurement of goods, services, and equipment required to support underground mining operations. The role ensures compliance with company procurement policies, timely supply of critical materials, cost optimization, and strong supplier relationship management. The position also supervises expediting staff and provides technical guidance to ensure efficient procurement processes. 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Manage the end-to-end procurement process for assigned categories, including requisition review, sourcing, tendering, evaluation, negotiation, and contracting.
• Participate in supplier audits, risk assessments, and compliance reviews
• Contribute to continuous improvement in procurement practices and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) utilization.
• Maintain accurate procurement records and reports for audit and compliance.
• Supervise, coach, and develop Expediting and other support staff.
• Monitor vendor performance and resolve delivery, quality, or service issues.
• Liaise closely with the warehouse, maintenance, engineering, and underground operations teams to understand material requirements.
• Conduct market analysis to identify cost-saving opportunities and supply risks.
• Source and evaluate new suppliers, focusing on safety, reliability, and value.
• Develop and maintain strong supplier relationships to ensure timely delivery, quality, and cost competitiveness.
• Review and authorize purchase orders within delegated limits.
• Ensure all purchasing activities comply with company policies, legal standards, and ethical 

Required Skills or Experience

Qualifications, Skills & Experience

• Minimum 5–7 years’ procurement experience, with at least 3 years in a mining, heavy industry, or related environment
• Strong knowledge of mining equipment, spare parts, consumables, and service procurement
• Proven experience in supplier negotiations, contract management, and procurement planning
• Demonstrated leadership experience in supervising or mentoring staff.
• Experience with ERP systems (SAP, Pronto, or similar) in a procurement environment.
• Ability to drive SUV.
• Demonstrates high standards of honesty, confidentiality, and accountability in procurement
• Strong ability to evaluate bids, contracts, and supplier performance.
• Effective in securing value while maintaining positive supplier relationships.
• Confident in making timely and informed procurement decisions.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for cross-functional collaboration.
• Ability to supervise, mentor, and develop junior staff.
• Works effectively with operations, warehouse, and finance teams in a multicultural, unionized mining environment.
• Thrives in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment with fluctuating supply demands.
• Ensures that supplier selection and material procurement align with mine safety standards.
