JOB SUMMARY

The General Manager serves as the chief strategic and operational leader of Oak Plaza Suites Kumasi, responsible for delivering exceptional guest experiences, operational excellence, financial profitability, market-share growth, and strong owner relations. This role oversees all departments, ensuring service quality aligned with Oak Plaza brand standards while adapting to the unique opportunities and competitive landscape of Kumasi and the broader Ghanaian hospitality market.

The General Manager ensures that service and operational strategies are implemented effectively, resulting in high guest satisfaction, strong employee engagement, and consistent business growth. The role inspires and directs the property leadership team, holding them accountable for meeting performance objectives and supporting their professional development.

This position also plays a key role in community relations - representing Oak Plaza Suites within Kumasi's business, tourism, and cultural sectors while building strong relationships with local authorities, organizations, corporate clients, travel partners, and the surrounding community.

JOB-SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Business Strategy Development

 

  • Stays informed on hospitality trends within Kumasi, Ghana, and West Africa; monitors competition and identifies new business opportunities (corporate, leisure, diplomatic, local events, etc.).
  • Develops strategic business plans that enhance guest satisfaction, revenue growth, and Oak Plaza’s competitive position in Kumasi.
  • Translates Oak Plaza’s brand strategy into clear operational initiatives tailored for the local market.

2. Business Strategy Execution

  • Leads the property in implementing business plans and performance metrics.
  • Ensures alignment across all departments toward hotel strategy and goals.
  • Encourages innovation and smart risk-taking to enhance service delivery and profitability.
  • Reviews performance regularly to refine and strengthen future business strategies.

3. Sales & Marketing

  • Works closely with the Sales & Marketing team to create and execute revenue-generating strategies.
  • Identifies new corporate clients, event partnerships, and long-stay opportunities prevalent in Kumasi’s growing business ecosystem.
  • Strengthens Oak Plaza Suites’ position through community engagement, digital presence, and customer relationship-building.
  • Ensures the effective use of reservation systems, OTAs, property website, and brand marketing tools.

4. Talent Management & Organizational Capability

  • Builds a strong, cohesive leadership team focused on accountability and performance.
  • Coaches department heads, creating clear development plans and ensuring succession readiness.
  • Promotes a culture of continuous learning, teamwork, and service excellence.
  • Ensures staffing levels support efficient operations and high guest satisfaction.

5. Business Information Analysis

  • Reviews key performance indicators including:
  • Market share in Kumasi
  • Financial results and profitability
  • Inventory and cost controls
  • Customer satisfaction scores
  • Employee engagement metrics
  • Uses data to guide decision-making and improve operational efficiency.

6. Employee & Labor Relations

  • Fosters an inclusive, respectful, and supportive work culture.
  • Ensures fair treatment and equitable compensation aligned with Ghanaian labor standards.
  • Maintains strong visibility with employees through an accessible “open-door policy.”
  • Works alongside HR to support staff engagement, training, and retention.

7. Revenue Management

  • Collaborates with Revenue Management to develop competitive rate strategies across seasons and market segments (corporate, leisure, group, long-stay).
  • Monitors competitor pricing and market conditions in Kumasi.
  • Ensures accurate forecasting, occupancy growth, ADR improvement, and optimized RevPAR.
  • Controls labor, operational costs, and capital expenditures to maximize profitability.

8. Owner Relations

  • Maintains transparent, proactive communication with ownership.
  • Provides detailed reports on financial performance, guest satisfaction, and operational issues.
  • Balances ownership objectives with Oak Plaza brand standards to drive sustained value creation.
  • Proposes investment opportunities and improvements to strengthen property performance.

9. Customer & Public Relations

  • Regularly interacts with guests to gather feedback and ensure service excellence.
  • Uses customer insights to recognize employees and enhance operational processes.
  • Represents Oak Plaza Suites in local business circles, tourism boards, community initiatives, and industry events.
  • Anticipates the needs of VIPs, corporate delegations, and special groups.
  • Ensures the hotel maintains a positive public image and community presence.

10. Compliance with Policies, Procedures & Standards

  • Ensures full compliance with:
  • Local Ghanaian regulations (health, safety, fire, labor, tax, etc.)
  • Oak Plaza brand service standards
  • Operational and financial controls
  • Conducts regular inspections of guest areas, back-of-house, and facilities.
  • Ensures all staff are properly trained and delivering service at expected standards.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

Education & Experience

Required:

  • 2-year diploma from an accredited institution in Hospitality Management, Business Administration, Tourism, or a related field, with 8+ years’ progressive experience in hotel operations, sales & marketing, finance, or related disciplines.
  • OR
  • 4-year bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management, Business Administration, Tourism, or related field, with 6+ years’ experience in hotel leadership roles.

Preferred:

  • Prior experience as a General Manager or Hotel Operations Manager in a full-service or upscale property.
  • Experience working in Ghana or within West African hospitality markets.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays, and evenings.
  • Demonstrated career growth with a record of exceptional performance.
