Job Description

About The Job

Warc is partnering with Rainforest Builders to implement the Agricultural Intensification Program (AIP) in Ghana and Sierra Leone. While Rainforest Builders focuses on reforesting natural reserves, Warc complements these efforts by supporting smallholder farmers in transitioning to sustainable, high-yield agricultural practices that balance environmental conservation with food security.

As the Agronomist in Ghana, you will be responsible for managing all agronomic activities, with a primary focus on plantain cultivation. Working closely with Warc’s Project Manager, various departments, and key stakeholders - including Rainforest Builders, farmers, and local partners - you will play a crucial role in ensuring the successful adoption of improved agricultural practices. You will lead a team of Extension Officers, providing training to farmers, managing input distribution, overseeing field operations, conducting field monitoring, and offering technical support to enhance yields while ensuring soil health and long-term sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

1. Farmer Training & Capacity Building

• Develop and deliver technical training sessions on climate-smart agriculture, land preparation, planting techniques, soil fertility management, and pest control.
• Organize on-field demonstration plots and hands-on training to help farmers adopt best practices.
• Train farmers on post-harvest handling, storage techniques, and market access strategies to reduce losses and increase profitability.
• Provide continuous technical support and troubleshooting to farmers throughout the growing season.

2. Field Operations & Crop Management

• Oversee the distribution and proper use of agricultural inputs, ensuring farmers receive high-quality seeds, fertilizers, and soil amendments.
• Supervise demonstration plots and work alongside farmers to test and implement improved farming techniques.
• Conduct regular farm visits to assess soil conditions, plant health, and overall farm performance.
• Implement integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, guiding farmers in sustainable pest and disease control.

3. Data Collection & Monitoring

• Work with the M&E team to track key performance indicators, including farm productivity, input adoption rates, and training effectiveness.
• Maintain accurate records of farmer profiles, training sessions, progress, and cropyields.
• Identify challenges in the field and recommend solutions to improve program impact.

4. Stakeholder Engagement & Community Coordination

• Act as the main point of contact for farmers and Extension Officers, ensuring smooth program implementation.
• Collaborate with community leaders, government agricultural agencies, and other partners to enhance farmer support services.
• Represent Warc and Rainforest Builders in community meetings.

Required Skills or Experience

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Agricultural Science, Soil Science, or a related field.
• 5 to 7 years of experience in agricultural extension services, farm management, or
• agribusiness development.
• Strong knowledge of crop production, soil health management, pest control, and climatesmart agriculture. Experience in plantain cultivation, including improved planting
• techniques, soil management, and pest control.
• Hands-on experience working with smallholder farmers in rural settings.
• Proven ability to train and support farmers in practical field settings.
• Experience in input distribution and supply chain coordination in an agricultural program.
• Strong data collection and reporting skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders.
• Ability to ride a motorbike and willingness to travel frequently to rural farming communities.
• Fluency in English and at least one local language spoken in the area (Twi).
• Willingness to live and work in rural areas, with frequent field visits.
